AI Policy Strategy for Google

Helping Google engage with EU AI policy

Google’s AI & Emerging Tech Policy team realized that engineers working with ML models needed better guidance in anticipating legislation and implementing it. At the same time, Google wanted to be more closely involved in the ongoing EU AI Act debate, helping understand legislation and, where possible, influence it.

My Role

I took advantage of my official roles as industry representative in the EU AI Act process to open doors and help shape an initial strategy. I guided Google’s team in understanding the roles of different bodies, including JTC21 and different OECD committees. I defined employee profiles that would be required to take Google’s initiatives forward and advised on the recruitment process for the Brussels office.

Results

In the words of my client, “We finally have a pipeline through which we can understand what’s going on with the AI Act and how our engineers worldwide should be thinking about it.” Google now has a robust mechanism for interpreting the latest developments around AI legislation in Brussels and disseminating them to country offices and engineering teams. At the same time, Google is represented in key conversations as they are taking place.
