Charitable giving has been challenged to meet the demands of the 21st century — many crises and social undercurrents that need attention at the same time. Some foundations pioneered the use of data-driven models and had success with it. The next step was to deploy big data and machine learning.
I founded a consultancy that promoted systemic philanthropy that targeted root causes of problems and devised holistic strategies for solving them. The approach was technical and data-driven from the start, and relied on the world’s biggest and richest dataset of grassroots movements and their funders.
The League grew to more than 350 employees, covered 100+ countries and disbursed more than USD 3b in its operations. It expanded into sustainable finance with success, helping patient for-profit investors find social enterprises to invest in in the emerging markets. Part of the business was sold to a major investment bank in 2020; the League continues as a philanthropic foundation in its own right.
